Open Book
My life is an open book,
I say on our first date
Shrugging to say "what of it?"
What do you want to know?
To clarify
When I say my life is an open book
I don’t mean I’ll tell you everything
I mean you’ll have to read to find out more
You will need to know which pages to look for
And how to look up the answers to the questions you’re most curious about
See the index in the back and refer to the appropriate page
Or maybe it’s alphabetized:
Q is for Queerness, Questioning
R is for Race (or lack thereof)
S is for Sexual awakenings
T is for Trauma, Transgender, Transition
I am an open book
Waiting to be picked up
Have my spine broken
And feel you leaf through me
Until you grow tired of the plot.
Charlie, Thanks for this amazing poem. You use the open book metaphor so powerfully, especially in the final stanza and final line. Congratulations on your award. I am a poet friend of Lyn and John who are so proud of you. Thanks for sharing your creativity and insight. Gary
