2018 Bagel Ode

My high school has an annual Bagel Day tradition- each year there is a day dedicated to the celebration of the bagel. On this day, the literary arts kids read a bagel ode.

The subzero arctic greets us with chills
As we head out the door seeking carbohydrate thrills
Shove feet into hand me down boots
For now it is time to return to our roots

We dodge piles of snow and slippery ice patches
Cover our noses so the cold won’t catch us
It’s not very far, just three blocks away
It’s not a big hike, it’s really ok

They’ve locked the back entrance we used to go through
So to the front we go, just me and you
Into the warmth of former fire station bagel shop
Where I stand at the door and my heart just stops

O, bagel! O, bagel!
How I love you so!
O, bagel! O, bagel!
Let’s never let go!

Smells of coffee, salt, and yeast
Let me know it’s time for a feast
My smile grows wide
And heart grows three times its size
May I have a baker’s dozen?

Why it’s thirteen and not twelve
I may never understand
But that extra bagel is like how I feel when I hold your hand:
Warm and soft, alas I have delved.
